‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 – New Images of Joel, Ellie, Abby and Dina

We don’t yet have a premiere date for “The Last of Us” Season 2 but HBO promises it’s coming in April 2025. In the meantime, Entertainment Weekly shares new images this week.

Entertainment Weekly previews “The Last of Us” Season 2 across two different articles – read one here and the other here – with the new images giving us fresh looks at Pedro Pascal’s Joel and Bella Ramsey’s Ellie, who are both back for the new season. They’ll be joined by fresh faces including Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby, Isabela Merced’s Dina, and Young Mazino’s Jesse, characters those who have played The Last of Us Part II are of course familiar with. It’s the arrival of Abby, in particular, that promises to change the game for the HBO series.

Kaitlyn Dever (Booksmart, No One Will Save You) may not look exactly the same as her video game counterpart, but the showrunners promise she embodies the spirit of the character.

“We would’ve struggled to find someone as good as Kaitlyn to play this role,” Neil Druckmann explains. “In the game, you have to play both characters [Ellie and Abby] and we need them to play differently. We needed Ellie to feel smaller and kind of maneuver around, and Abby was meant to play more like Joel in that she’s almost like a brute in the way she can physically manhandle certain things. That doesn’t play as big of a role in this version of the story because there’s not as much violent action moment to moment. It’s more about the drama. I’m not saying there’s no action here. It’s just, again, different priorities and how you approach it.”

“I personally think that there is an amazing opportunity here to delve into someone who is perhaps physically more vulnerable than the Abby in the game, but whose spirit is stronger,” co-creator Craig Mazin adds. “And then the question is, ‘Where does her formidable nature come from and how does it manifest?’ That’s something that will be explored now and later.”

The second season of HBO’s “The Last of Us” will adapt video game sequel The Last of Us Part II, but don’t expect the game’s events to be contained to just one season. It’s likely that the sequel’s sprawling, multi-character story will span the timeline of at least two seasons.

As for the show’s future beyond Season 2 & 3, Mazin tells EW, “I think it’s pretty likely that our story will extend past a Season 3. How far past? I can’t say. And that’s not to say that there are not other stories that could be told, but this story is the one that Neil and I are telling.”
