Simu Liu: “Sleeping Dogs” Film Still Alive

Just a few weeks after it seemed to be dead, the film adaptation of the acclaimed Hong Kong-set 2012 open-world action-adventure video game “Sleeping Dogs” may be resurrected.

The game was a GTA-style open-world title, but set in the city of Hong Kong. In the game, Will Yun Lee voiced the lead role of Wei Shen, an undercover cop in Hong Kong on a mission to take down a powerful criminal organization – the Sun On Yee Triad.

The game was acclaimed for its story, characters, city recreation and combat elements, but its developer, United Front Games, has shuttered so a needed remastering is likely off the cards.

Asian action legend Donnie Yen had been trying to get the film adaptation developed for years with him as the lead, despite the character being around half Yen’s age. He recently indicated in an interview that he had “invested some of my own money into obtaining the drafts and some of the rights” to the property.

He was keen to do it, but was now resigned to the fact the property was dead. Or is it? Marvel’s “Shang Chi” actor Simu Liu has taken to social media to say he is: “working with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen!”.

That would suggest it’s maybe not as dead as Yen indicated. The Canadian actor, who is closer to the correct age of the lead character, has expressed interest in the property before in interviews.
