Rory McIlroy makes cheeky dig at Ryder Cup teammate Shane Lowry after pipping him to Pebble Beach title
Rory McIlroy was quick to poke fun at close friend Shane Lowry after scooping the £2.9million jackpot prize at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The 35-year-old pipped his Ryder Cup teammate by two strokes to finish 21 under par following a stunning final round of 66. McIlroy pipped Lowry to the Pebble Beach title after finishing 21 under parGetty McIlroy, who finished just one shot behind Brandt Snedeker’s tournament record which he set in 2015, recorded five birdies and an eagle on Sunday. As for his playing partner Lowry, who struck a marshall on the 15th hole with a wayward shot, he managed a four-under 68 to finish in second spot. The Irishman added £1.75m to his bank balance as a result, but ultimately came just short in his quest to claim his fourth PGA Tour title. Incredibly, both McIlroy and Lowry managed hole-in-ones in the opening round. McIlroy achieved the second ace of his PGA Tour career on the par-three 15th hole on the back nine at Spyglass Hill on Thursday. Meanwhile Lowry’s hole-in-one occurred on the famous 113-yard seventh hole which overlooks the Pacific Ocean on the front nine of the Pebble Beach course. It means that the 37-year-old has now completed his own golfing Holy Trinity by producing a hole-in-one on three of the world’s most iconic par threes, having also done so at at Augusta National’s 16th hole and the par-three 17th at TPC Sawgrass’ island-green. Speaking after his ace, Lowry was quick to joke that his was better than McIlroy’s, something the four-time Major champion referenced after lifting his 27th PGA Tour title. In a video shared by the PGA Tour on Instagram, McIlroy said: “It’s been a pretty cool week. “Played Cypress [Point] for the first time. Lifting up his prize, he quipped: “But I got the trophy.” McIlroy continued: “It’s just been an amazing week, thanks everyone for your support. “I couldn’t think of a better way to start the season. I guess start as you mean to go on.” Though McIlroy did express his delight at Lowry scooping a huge pay day having birdied the 18th to finish one stroke ahead of Justin Rose and Lucas Glover, who took home £940k apiece. GettyLowry was quick to congratulate McIlroy over his latest success[/caption] He told CBS: “Getting the job done is, ultimately what I needed to do. “It was also good to see Shane make four to finish second on his own. “So that’ll make our flight home a little bit better for both of us.” Neither man will be in the field for the Phoenix Open which starts later this week, where you can expect wild scenes at the iconic par-three ‘party’ hole.
