Report: Dennis Schroder rerouted to Pistons as part of Jimmy Butler trade

The Detroit Pistons got their backup ball-handler.

Point guard Dennis Schroder is set to join the upstart team after being rerouted from the Utah Jazz as part of the blockbuster Jimmy Butler deal, Detroit Free Press’s Omari Sankofa reported on Thursday.

ESPN’s Shams Charania confirmed the report.

According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, the Jazz will receive wings K.J. Martin and Josh Richardson along with a 2028 second-round pick.

It’s been a turbulent day for the former Raptor after seeing his name first appear in the report on the initial Butler deal. After originally being set to go to Miami, he was flipped to the Jazz, who then finalized the move to send him to the Pistons instead.

Schroder was traded to the Golden State Warriors from the Brooklyn Nets in December.

Since joining the Warriors, the 31-year-old averaged 10.6 points, 2.3 rebounds and 4.4 assists while shooting 37.5 per cent from the field and 32.2 per cent from three-point range.

Prior to the initial Nets trade, Schroder was averaging 18.4 points, three rebounds and 6.6 assists while shooting 45.2 per cent from the field and 38.7 per cent from three.

The Pistons have needed an additional ball-handler after losing breakout guard Jaden Ivey to a broken fibula. According to NBA insider Marc Spears, Ivey has progressed well, is wearing a walking boot and has begun light weight-bearing activity. He’ll be re-evaluated in four weeks.

Detroit is currently 25-26 and is the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference.
