Arsenal can sign Mathues Cunha for £62million this summer with Benjamin Sesko emerging as their more likely target up top over Alexander Isak.

The Gunners opted against bringing in another attacking option during the January transfer window, failing to make a single addition to the squad.

A bid for Ollie Watkins was rejected by Aston Villa and while the club did explore a deal to sign Sesko mid-season, RB Leipzig not prepared to sell last month.

Moves for Mathys Tel and Alvaro Morata were also explored but no formal offers were ever submitted with Arsenal not convinced either man could deliver the instant impact required up top.

Arsenal’s need for a centre forward was underlined again on Thursday night as they crashed out of the Carabao Cup at the semi-final stage after defeat to Newcastle United.

Kai Havertz will remain their only option up top with Gabriel Martinelli also picking up a knock with Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus currently sidelined.

Arsenal’s prudency in January will heighten expectations in the summer but Mikel Arteta’s side are prepared to deliver with big money to be spent on a centre forward.

Newcastle star Isak is regarded as the ‘dream ticket’ but even at this stage, a successful move for the striker valued at over £120million is regard as ‘implausible,’ the Mail report.

While Arsenal will explore the deal, Sesko is regarded as a more likely option.

The Slovenia international rejected a move to the Premier League last summer to continue learning his trade in the Bundesliga but is thought to have a new release clause which will become active at the end of the season. His previous release clause stood at £55m.

Arsenal are also looking to reinforce elsewhere in attack and Wolves star Cunha is a player admired at the Emirates.

The former Atletico Madrid star signed a new contract at Molineux last week – a deal which includes a £62m release clause.

The Mail reports there are no restrictions over which clubs can meet that fee with Chelsea, Tottenham, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest also among his admirers.
