The annual Ops Selamat has been deemed a success over this year’s Chinese New Year period, at least according to Johor police. According to The Star, authorities saw a drop in road accidents in the state during the six-day operation, conducted from January 28 to February 2 nationwide, compared to the year before.

“Overall, Johor police showed good performance with a drop in accident rates by 52 cases, equating to a 4.5% decrease to 1,169 cases from 1,221 in the previous operation,” said Johor police chief Comm M Kumar, adding that there were also five fewer accidents (eight) than the 13 that were reported previously, a reduction of 62.5%. Overall deaths also fell from 16 to eight.

Kumar also said that 40 individuals were arrested for various traffic offences, such as drunk and dangerous driving. “Besides enforcement, police also focused on educating road users, resulting in increased awareness of road rules during this year’s operation.”

Meanwhile, state police issued a total of 11,645 traffic summonses over the six days, compared to 23,386 in 2023, a decrease of 11,741. As usual, the main offence was speeding, which led to 3,963 summonses being issued.
