Non-league manager sends cheeky offer to Gary Lineker and Mark Chapman before 1000th game
Dorking Wanderers head coach Marc White has offered his services to Match of the Day in a promise to ‘liven up the show’. The funny interaction was prompted by the Match of the Day account on X congratulating White on his 1000th game in the dugout. Dorking Wanderers currently sit fifth in the National LeagueGetty The post read: “From five mates playing in the park to 12 promotions up to the National League South – it’s been some journey for Marc White and Dorking Wanderers.” On the club’s account, White replied: “Thanks guys, much appreciated, see you in the PL, happy to take over from Gary/Chappers and liven up the show.” It would take a further five promotions for the non-league side to reach the top flight and probably the investment similar to Wrexham’s Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Unfortunately the Dorking boss will not be on our television screens next season as BBC has confirmed the new MOTD line up. Kelly Cates, Gabby Logan and Mark Chapman will be the new hosts who are set to split duties across Match of the Day, Match of the Day: Champions League and MOTD2. In what marks the sixth set of main presenters for the flagship TV programme, Sky Sports anchor Cates will form a trio alongside current BBC stars Logan and Chapman. The daughter of Liverpool icon Sir Kenny Dalglish, Cates has previously worked for the BBC as a presenter on Radio 5 Live. “We are all friends and we’ve known each other for a long time and that’s a really lovely part of it,” said Cates, who will also continue to work for Sky Sports alongside her new role. “Not only is it a great role just on its own but I’m sharing it with two people I really admire, respect and genuinely like. It’s a great set-up.” Fan favourites Alan Shearer and Micah Richards will continue to appear on the show as pundits. Lineker will present Match of the Day for the rest of the season before leaving his role Cates will be one of three presenters to host Match of the Day from next campaignGetty Lineker took the Match of the Day hot seat in 1999 when he replaced Des Lynam. The former England, Tottenham, Everton, Leicester and Barcelona striker will conclude his Match of the Day coverage at the end of the 2024/25 season. He will return to the BBC to cover the North America 2026 World Cup as he signed an 18-month contract extension. Speaking recently on The Rest Is Football podcast, Lineker explained why he felt the time was right to leave his role as Match of the Day host. “It has been an absolute joy and privilege to present such an iconic show for the BBC, but all things have to come to an end,” Lineker said. “It came at a point where really the BBC and Match of the Day, they’ve got the rights for another three years, the cycle starts from next season so it felt like if I just do one more year it would be a bit weird.”
