McIlroy’s Boston Common set to face LAGC, aim to rebound from OT loss

The team that absolutely dominated its opening TGL match is set to go up against the squad that features the latest PGA Tour winner.

The fifth match of the 2025 TGL season features Los Angeles Golf Club — with one roster pivot from its first match — against Boston Common Golf, led by Rory McIlroy, who won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am on Sunday.

Boston Common looks to rebound after its overtime defeat to Jupiter Links last week, while LAGC is keen to keep its momentum going from its record-setting effort in their opening match earlier in January.

THE MATCH

Los Angeles Golf Club: Collin Morikawa, Justin Rose, Tommy Fleetwood (sitting: Sahith Theegala) vs. Boston Common Golf: Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott, Keegan Bradley (sitting: Hideki Matsuyama).

• LAGC is back in action after its 12-1 thumping of Jupiter Links GC in Match 2. The 12 points scored by LAGC is the most so far by a team in a single match this season.

• The key for LAGC was its performance in the par-5s. It had a 4-0-1 record on the long holes in its opening match against Jupiter Links.

• Boston Common is running back its same lineup after its overtime loss to Jupiter Links GC.

• Boston Common Golf is the oldest team in TGL, with an average age of nearly 38 years old, but it has an average Official World Golf Ranking of 10 — the best in TGL. It is the only TGL team where each golfer has won a major championship.

• Three holes are making their TGL debut: ‘Hang Low’ (par-4 6th), ‘Fallen Pine’ (par-3 7th) and ‘Navigator’ (par-5 15th).

PLAYER NOTES

Rory McIlroy returns to action in TGL after winning the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am Sunday on the PGA Tour — his first event of the season. An overtime TGL loss Monday seemed to have minimal impact on McIlroy’s week inside the ropes, as he cruised to a two-shot victory, leading the event in strokes gained: off the tee and ranking seventh in strokes gained: putting… Adam Scott comes to his second TGL match with plenty of momentum from Sunday on Tour, having fired an 8-under 64 in the final round at Pebble Beach, the round of the day. He finished T22… Keegan Bradley finished T65.

Tommy Fleetwood is set to make his TGL debut, replacing Sahith Theegala in the LAGC lineup. Fleetwood has been on a solid run around the globe since the summertime, having finished inside the top 25 in every worldwide event he’s teed it up at since the Olympics (where he won silver)… Collin Morikawa finished T17 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He’s had some success over his Boston adversary, having defeated Adam Scott in their singles match at the 2024 Presidents Cup. He is also the only golfer in four matches to have won both singles holes in one match… Justin Rose is back for LAGC after finishing T3 at Pebble Beach.

SCORING EXPLANATION VIA TGL

Modern Match Play

• Each hole has a value of 1 point, and the team with the fewest shots on a hole wins the point.

• Ties are worth 0 points and there are no carryovers.

• The Hammer — Each hole is worth 1 point unless a team throws the Hammer. This game-changer increases the value of a hole by 1 point when used, giving teams the opportunity to press home an advantage or put their opponents under added pressure. It changes possession each time it’s used.

• The team with the most points wins the match.

• Each match will be played until all 15 holes are completed, even if the match outcome has been decided. A team’s total number of holes won will be used as a tiebreaker in the SoFi Cup Standings at the end of the regular season.

Format/Sessions

• Within a match, there will be two sessions played in two different formats

• Triples – 9 holes – Three players per team competing in an alternate-shot format.

• Singles – 6 holes – A one-on-one, head-to-head competition for the entire hole. Each player from each team plays a total of two full holes during the session.

• Overtime – If the match is tied after 15 holes, the teams will play a best-of-three, closest-to-the-pin competition to decide the winner. This will be similar to penalty kicks in soccer.

• The hole location and orientation of the green will remain unchanged from the final/15th hole of the match.

• The shot distance will be between 25-50 yards and decided pre-match by our match official.  All players will play from the same spot. The ball must finish on the putting surface to be eligible.

SoFi Cup Standings

• Similar to the NHL, TGL, presented by SoFi, will use a points-based system for the SoFi Cup Standings.

• For each match, teams can be awarded up to 2 points towards their regular-season total based on the following:

• Win in regulation = 2 points
• Win in overtime = 2 points
• Loss in overtime = 1 point
• Loss in regulation = 0 points
