Mavericks’ Irving still ‘grieving’ over Doncic trade to Lakers

Like almost everyone else, Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving was shocked to see the news that his backcourt partner Luka Doncic got traded to the Los Angeles Lakers late Saturday night.

Speaking publicly for the first time since the blockbuster trade, Irving told reporters that he’s still sorting through some of his emotions after the trade.

“Just really shocked,” Irving said of the deal after Tuesday’s 118-116 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers. “You just don’t imagine you’re going to get ready to go to sleep and then you find out news like that.

“It’s still a grieving process right now. I miss my hermano.”

Now it’s not as if the Mavericks didn’t get anything for Doncic, as Irving will now get to team up with 10-time All-Star Anthony Davis. But Irving said it was still devastating to see Doncic go and he can understand why Mavs fans are upset.

“This is a business, it’s way above my pay grade, and I’ve just got to adjust and be ready to welcome in my new teammates with open arms and kind of be ready to go back to Dallas, too, to speak in front of our fans,” Irving said. “I know they are feeling it, too. I’m feeling it too, guys. So, yeah, it’s just an adjustment period. I don’t want to downplay this, either, or disrespect our new guys. They’re going to help us win, and help us build toward a championship, but just like everyone else at home, when you kind of see it from afar, it hurts.”

Doncic and Irving were less than a year removed from leading the Mavericks to the NBA Finals where they lost to the Boston Celtics. The trade caused an uproar in the sports world, leaving most Mavs fans furious — including Doncic’s father, Sasa, who said his son “absolutely did not deserve this.”

After Tuesday’s loss, the Mavericks are now 26-25 and sit ninth in the Western Conference.

Davis did not play Tuesday, as he’s still dealing with an abdominal strain. His next chance to make his Dallas debut will be Thursday against the Celtics in a rematch of last season’s NBA Finals.
