“Marvel Snap” Goes Dark With TikTok Ban

The popular mobile game “Marvel Snap” has been removed from U.S. app stores in the wake of the American ban on TikTok going into effect last night.

ByteDance, the company that owns TikTok, also owns and operates Nuverse, the publisher of the digital collectible card game “Marvel Snap”. While TikTok’s shutdown was announced a long time ago, the sudden shuttering of this game has caught many by surprise.

In fact, at least ten ByteDance-owned apps were also disabled and removed from app stores Saturday night because of U.S. divest-or-ban legislation prohibiting their distribution in the country.

The decision to enforce the ban was upheld by a unanimous Supreme Court ruling of 9-0. The app, from developer Second Dinner, has displayed a message to American players that the game was temporarily unavailable:

“Unfortunately, MARVEL SNAP is temporarily unavailable in U.S. app stores and is unavailable to play in the U.S. In a surprise to Second Dinner and our publisher Nuverse, MARVEL SNAP was affected by the takedown of TikTok late on Saturday, January 18th. MARVEL SNAP isn’t going anywhere. We’re actively working on getting the game up as soon as possible and will update you once we have more to share.”

The apps will remain on user devices if they have already been installed but can’t be redownloaded if deleted or restored if you move to a new device. In-app purchases and new subscriptions are also no longer possible.

Trump told NBC News in an interview Saturday that he would ‘most likely’ order a 90-day extension beyond the January 19 date requiring ByteDance to divest TikTok and other apps.
