Lightning’s Lilleberg suspended two games for interference on Red Wings’ Compher
The Tampa Bay Lightning will be without Emil Lilleberg for two games after the NHL Department of Player Safety handed down a suspension Monday afternoon.
The Tampa Bay Lightning will be without defenceman Emil Lilleberg for two games after the NHL Department of Player Safety handed down a suspension Monday afternoon.
The announcement came following a hearing earlier in the day.
Lilleberg receives the punishment for a hit he delivered in the second period of Saturday’s loss to the Detroit Red Wings. On the play, he laid a late, high hit on J.T. Compher after the forward had passed the puck.
In the Department of Player Safety’s video explaining the decision, they explain that “In addition to the lateness, what causes this hit to rise to the level of supplemental discipline, is the significant head contact on this play, combined with the force.”
Under terms of the collective bargaining agreement, Lilleberg will lose $9,062.50, which will go to the players’ emergency assistance fund.
Lilleberg has zero goals and 11 assists in 45 games with the Lightning this season with an average of 15:51 in ice time.
Tampa Bay (26-19-3) is fourth in the Atlantic Division and has lost three straight. The Lightning next play Tuesday at home against the Chicago Blackhawks.
