Landon Dupont ties Niedermayer record in WHL
Landon Dupont makes Western Hockey League history again.
Landon Dupont has Western Hockey League history again.
It had been 35 years since a WHL defenceman has hit the 50-point mark in their rookie season but Dupont did just that on Sunday night.
His 50th point came as a secondary assist as he helped Dominik Rymon score midway through the second period in Everett Silvertips’ 5-4 OT victory over the Kamloops Blazers.
With 12 goals and 38 assists in 47 games Dupont became the first defender to reach the 50-point milestone since Blazers legend and Hockey Hall of Famer Scott Niedermayer had 69 points in 1989-90.
Dupont is the first defender to be granted exceptional status to play full-time in the WHL as a 15-year-old. He is the second player to get this status in the league, after NHL Calder Trophy winner Connor Bedard.
In the first seven games of the 2024-25 season, Dupont had four goals and seven assists, and since then has kept up a solid points pace. Among all other rookie CHL defencemen, he ranks first in scoring this season.
The Calgary native is expected to be one of the first players selected in the 2027 NHL Draft.
