Jamie Carragher names two Chelsea players who are ‘obviously’ not good enough
'He's not good enough to play for them.'
Chelsea do not have a centre-forward or a goalkeeper good enough to win the Premier League title, believes Jamie Carragher.
The Liverpool legend does not see as striker Nicolas Jackson or stopper Robert Sanchez as up to the standards required of an elite team.
Jackson has had mixed reviews since arriving from Villarreal in 2023, but he has scored goals, netting 17 times in his first season and nine so far this campaign.
However, he does miss chances and questions remain over whether the 23-year-old has the quality for a very top team.
Sanchez has come in for a lot of criticism this season from Blues fans after a number of mistakes and Carragher says the club must bring in a better goalkeeper.
‘Have they got the guy at the top end of the pitch who can get that goal to take the game away from the opposition?’ Carragher questioned on Sky Sports.
‘We’re talking about Jackson, is he good enough for Chelsea to go and win a Premier League title? Is the goalkeeper, at the other end, good enough to keep them in the game? Obviously not.’
Carragher added: ‘The goalkeeper, we know he’s never quite been at the level of Chelsea, but huge errors. He’s not good enough to play for them really, that’s just the bottom line.
‘Those results when you need a goal to take the game away from the opposition or a goalkeeper to keep you in it, that’s where they’re still lacking.’
Gary Neville agreed that Sanchez is not up to the standard required and while he is a fan of Jackson, he feels Chelsea need a better option up front.
‘The two most difficult positions on the pitch, the two that carry the most responsibility,’ said the former Manchester United defender.
‘I think the goalkeeper’s in trouble, I think he’s used up all his credits. You’ve got to be consistent and reliable, you can’t make mistakes, obviously you do, but they have to be rare.’
On Jackson he added: ‘I actually like him. I think he’s a handful. But he strikes me as someone in a Chelsea title-winning season of the past he would have been the second or third striker, not the main man.’
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca stuck with Jackson against West Ham on Monday night but he wielded the axe on Sanchez, picking Filip Jorgensen in goal in front of the Spaniard for the 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge.
