Could apps for time management and calendars go the wayside? With Large Language Models, and ChatGPT now capable of scheduling tasks, combined with the popularity of time management apps or calendars (remember Sunrise Calendar) makes an app that can do all the above, a perfect match.

The J1 Assistant by Matter is first and foremost a task-oriented app, and it’s powered by its own Large Language Model, Jarvis. The idea is to enable you to not just receive responses to your questions, which is already done by ChatGPT, but also be able to streamline the task. Meaning, you can automate setting up the day-to-day tasks, but also organize them so that you’re receiving notifications on things you’ve asked Jarvis to do for you. And all this is done simply by the power of a voice command.

A few examples that Matter offers on their website is not only asking Jarvis when your favorite NBA team is playing, but also asking it to set up reminders to send you an alert 30 minutes before each game starts

Or another way Matter recommends the J1 Assistant could be used is to set up a diet plan. Jarvis can recommend weight-loss recipes by prompting it a couple of ingredients you’ve selected – in this case beef or chicken – and not only come up with a list of recipes but also arrange these into a folder that breaks your diet down day-by-day, so you easily access your meal plan within the J1 Assistant application.

The user experience on the app though in some ways aims to strike a balance between nostalgia and innovation.

The grey and white design scheme evokes a classic, minimalist aesthetic reminiscent of the first generation of mobile applications. But the interaction mechanics within the app introduces a unique twist that might be a first for most smartphone users – swiping to execute requests.

Tapping on the ‘Microphone’ button prompts a text box, which transcribes your voice command in real-time. But then you’re shown a menu of multiple applications sorted in an arch — a feature Matter calls “Ripple Touch”— that you can swipe towards to complete the query.

Some of these options include Jarvis’ distinctly orange and black icon or opt to send the request as a message or log it as a To-Do. The J1 Assistant also gives you the option to instead query ChatGPT or simply run your question through Google Search. However, if you access your settings you can customize which applications you want to have show up in your “Ripple Touch” menu.

The gesture-based swiping toward specific apps to complete the request offers a more tactile approach that for some might feel refreshingly different, while for others might take some getting used to.

Beyond the task-oriented assistant features, J1 Assistant also aims in some ways to do everything.

Among its features includes a “Search” feature to conduct a search of your query within up to 16 different applications and webpages, sometimes with up to four windows at once. These applications include search engines like DuckDuckGo and Bing, or social networks. Or you can use the J1 Assistant’s search function to search multiple e-commerce sites at once, including Amazon, Temu, Best Buy and Ebay.

The Beta version of Matter’s J1 Assistant is available to download on Android as an APK. While it works on most Android devices, as of writing, it’s currently optimized for the Samsung Galaxy S24 series, S23 series, S22 series, Google Pixel 9 series, Pixel 8 series, and Pixel 7 series.
