‘It shook me up’ – I’ve fought Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder but nobody hit me harder than ‘The Destroyer’
Joseph Parker has duked it out with some of the biggest punchers of his generation. Among the seemingly endless list of heavyweight talent the Kiwi has locked horns with are Anthony Joshua, Deontay Wilder, Dillian Whyte, Zhilei Zhang and Derek Chisora. It is therefore a massive compliment to Andy Ruiz Jr, and his dynamite fists, that the 33-year-old reserves the distinction of the biggest puncher he has ever faced for him. “Joe Joyce dropped me, Dillian Whyte dropped me, Zhilei Zhang dropped me but the one that really left an impression was Andy Ruiz,” he told talkSPORT.com. “Just because of the speed that he punches with, it shook me up. “I was able to recover but he hit very hard. All of those guys hit hard but Ruiz stood out.” In December 2016, Parker snatched the vacant WBO heavyweight title away from Ruiz Jr’s grasp in a nip-and-tuck affair. Many felt the fight could have gone either way and the judges were split. One official scored it even at 114-114 while the other two edged it to Parker via a narrow margin of 115-113. Parker held onto the red and gold strap for just under a year and a half before he ran into Anthony Joshua in a WBA, WBO and IBF unification clash at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Despite a spirited performance, Parker was outboxed by AJ over the distance and lost via unanimous decision. Parker is currently the WBO ‘interim’ champion – a belt he won from Zhang in his last outing. However, newly-appointed WBO president Gustavo Olivieri has confirmed that Parker will be stripped of the lesser belt once the opening bell sounds, per the major sanctioning body’s rules. “When you have an interim champion, we don’t unify an interim champion with a legitimate champion from another organization, that is our policy,” the newly appointed WBO president Gustavo Olivieri told talkSPORT.com last month. “So what we’ve done in this case is we’ve advised Queensberry Promotions, that we have no objection to Parker fighting for the IBF title. “None at all. It is a great fight. We have a great relationship with the IBF, I’m very close to its president Darryl Peoples. Parker won the WBO title by beating Ruiz JrGetty “But since we have this policy, he [Parker] would have to relinquish the title. “So probably what we are going to do, in consultation with the Championship Committee, is allow Joseph as a matter of respect to enter the ring as WBO interim champion and be announced as the champion. “But once the bell rings, signifying the commencement of the fight, the title should be declared vacant automatically.” Follow talkBOXING on social media talkBOXING is now on Twitter and Facebook.
