‘How many times? – Tom Brady’s awkward chat with Bill Belichick after his first Super Bowl triumph in New Orleans

“With a quarterback like Brady, going for the win is not that dangerous, because he’s not going to make a mistake.”

Bill Belichick‘s great gift was knowing a clutch performer when he saw one — and it helped him make a decision in 2002 that unleashed over a decade of dominance.

Legendary former New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is preparing for his first Super Bowl in the Fox Sports booth as the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles collide in New Orleans.

He will share all the experience from a career that saw him claim the Vince Lombardi Trophy seven times back in the city where it all began.

As hard as it is to imagine now, at one point the GOAT was a sixth-round pick looking to win his first title in a defiant message to the 31 teams who overlooked him in the 2000 NFL Draft.

In his first season as a starter, Brady took on Kurt Warner’s legendary St. Louis Rams offense — known as the Greatest Show on Turf — as a scrappy underdog.

He hadn’t set the world alight in the game but his team had the ball on their own 17-yard line with 81 seconds left and no timeouts – the score was 17-17.

Belichick could have taken the pressure off his 24-year-old QB and asked him to take a knee – he decided to swing for the fences.

Minus two spikes, Brady completed five or six passes for 53 yards to set up a 48-yard Adam Vinatieri field goal.

“You’re looking at a team that has some f****** guts, man,” Rams defensive end Chidi Ahanotu said. “Brady never flinched, and they’ve got one hell of a gutsy coach.”

“A game like this makes you trust in all those corny-sounding cliches,” former Patriots linebacker and current head coach Mike Vrabel said.

“On paper you may not look as talented or as fast or as strong as your opponent, but if you get guys to buy into a system and fight to the bitter end, you can accomplish incredible things.”

After the win, Brady was invited to continue the Super Bowl tradition of announcing he was ‘going to Disney World’ and enjoying a free trip to Orlando.

It forced him to seek out Belichick, who was enjoying a moment with family and friends in his hotel room.

“Have a beer,” said the notorious disciplinarian in an exchange documented by Sports Illustrated.

Brady asked Belichick for permission to miss the team flight home before enduring an awkward silence.

“Of course you can go,” Belichick said. “How many times do you win the Super Bowl?”

Little did they know…

Brady is now right back where he started as a fresh-eyed newcomer despite being in his 11th Super Bowl.

He may have seven rings and a $375 million contract, but being in the booth is a different beast and honing your skills in front of millions is a tough ask.

Just like 2002, he has plenty of experience in his team to help out, including veteran producer Richie Zyontz, who is on his eighth trip to the big show.

“We have all found that Tom is a helluva guy and a fabulous teammate,” Zyontz said. “He loves what he does in calling the games, is determined to be great.

“At some point in the meeting, we just turn him loose and he provides everyone with such valuable insight to inform the broadcast.

“I’ve seen him get better and better, improving every week. He has really become on point at the line of scrimmage, quickly pointing things out that a quarterback would see.

“I really think he will be even better next year. He prepares like a maniac, and I believe with a season under his belt, he will re-calibrate that preparation a bit to be even more on point and precise with what he needs to enhance the broadcast.

“Kevin Burkhardt on play-by-play has been such a big help to his development as well. Kevin is so willing to share and that makes everyone around him better.”

Brady has walked the walk, now it’s time to talk the talk.
