Filmmaker Chris Columbus, the director of the first two Harry Potter film adaptations, has praised HBO’s upcoming TV series adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s books, which is currently in development.
Speaking with People, Columbus dubs the project a “spectacular idea” as it will be allowed to go into a much deeper dive than he could on the films.
Though Columbus’ two films are widely seen as the weakest of the series, they succeeded greatly in terms of casting and conjuring up the Wizarding World. Unfortunately due to the limitations of a film runtime, various scenes and subplots from the books couldn’t make it into the mix.
That won’t be a problem for the TV series, says Columbus:
“There’s a certain restriction when you’re making a film. Our film was 2 hours and 40 minutes, and the second one was almost as long. [We tried] to get as much of the book in as possible.
The fact that they have the leisure of [multiple] episodes for each book, I think that’s fantastic. You can get all the stuff in the series that we didn’t have an opportunity to do … all these great scenes that we just couldn’t put in the films. I look forward to seeing what they’re trying to do with it. I think it’s great.”
Principal photography on the TV series will reportedly commence this summer. Showrunner Francesca Gardiner is in charge of the project, which is expected to take around ten years and multiple seasons to complete the seven-novel saga.
