Harry Kane sends warning to £50m star over Manchester United and Arsenal transfer
Kane is concerned for his teammate.
Harry Kane has warned ‘great young player’ Mathys Tel he must choose his next club carefully amid interest from Premier League giants Manchester United and Arsenal.
The Bayern Munich forward has attracted interest from a number of Premier League clubs during the January transfer window.
Tel looked set to join Tottenham after the north London club agreed a £50m deal with Bayern, but the 19-year-old has reportedly rejected Spurs’ advances.
That has opened the door to Manchester United and Arsenal, who are both keen to strengthen before the transfer window shuts on Monday night.
Tel is said to be open to joining either Premier League club after struggling for game-time under Bayern boss Vincent Kompany.
The France U21 star, who cost Bayern Munich over £20m in the summer of 2022, featured heavily for the German giants across his first two seasons in the Bundesliga.
However, Tel has featured in just eight league games so far this season and is keen to leave and take on a more pivotal role at another club.
Despite Tel’s lack of minutes, Kane insists his Bayern Munich teammate has ‘a lot of potential’ and can improve greatly over the next few years.
In terms of his future, Kane says it is imperative that Tel gets more ‘playing time’ should he leave Bayern.
‘Mathys is a great young player,’ the England captain told reporters after Bayern Munich’s thrilling 4-3 win over Holstein Kiel on Saturday.
‘I have worked with him for 18 months now. He has a lot of potential, works and likes to train hard. He can still improve, but he has the right mindset to do so.
‘Whatever his next step is, the most important thing is that he plays. My advice is that wherever he goes now, he should make sure he gets playing time and experience.’
Kane scored twice as Bayern withstood a late comeback from Kiel to extend their lead at the top of the table. Tel was left out amid speculation he is set to leave.
Speaking after Bayern Munich’s Champions League clash on Wednesday night, the club’s sporting director, Max Eberl, revealed Tel had asked to leave.
‘Mathys decided at the time [in December] that he wanted to stay, that he wanted to assert himself. Now Mathys comes along and says that he can imagine doing something,’ Eberl said.
‘And now we have to think about what we are going to do, whether we are going to do it. The playing time is not satisfactory for him, and that is understandable.
‘It is now the end of January. And now it is more difficult for everyone involved. We have to see what is ultimately best for everyone involved, for Mathys and for Bayern Munich.’
Tel would bolster a Manchester United squad that have struggled for goals this season.
Ruben Amorim has sanctioned the departure of Marcus Rashford, who has agreed a loan move to Aston Villa.
Mikel Arteta, meanwhile, is desperate to bolster his attacking options before the transfer deadline.
Arsenal launched a stunning move for Aston Villa and England striker Ollie Watkins last week but were knocked back by their Premier League rivals.
