Stephen Grove has sustained a back injury following his massive accident in the opening stages of Sunday’s Meguiar’s Bathurst 12 Hour.
The team owner/driver was running eighth in the third hour of the race when his Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo collided with Kenny Habul’s fellow Mercedes-AMG at Skyline, resulting in Grove making heavy contact with the wall and the car becoming airborne on the run into The Dipper.
Grove climbed from the car under his own power but was taken to Orange Hospital for further evaluation, which has revealed the 57-year-old Australian sustained “damage to his back.” according to a team statement.
Grove has since been transferred to Westmead Hospital in Sydney for further tests.
“We want to thank all of our fans and loyal supporters for the outpouring of love the team has received,” the statement read.
“Steve is in good spirits and looks forward to getting back to the track again.”
While no further action was made by race control over the incident, Habul expressed remorse, indicating that he thought Grove was letting him by on track.
