It’s great to see Google finally giving its official Messages app the proper care and attention it deserves, after so many years of shuffling between various messaging apps and services. In addition to new updates for RCS, it looks like the Mountain View company could be working on a way to integrate WhatsApp calls into Google Messages.

As reported in Android Authority’s APK teardown, version v20250131 of Google Messages shows an option to initiate a WhatsApp call – at the moment, tapping on a video call option within a message thread will initiate a Google Meet call setup page. At the moment however, this only worked for individual calls with no such options for group chats, which still shows the Google Meet option.

Given that no official teaser was given by either Google or WhatsApp at this point, it’s unknown if and when Google will formally add this feature to the Messages app. Should it push through however, this might serve as a better option for most users given that not everyone uses Google Meet for casual video calls, and most users will have a WhatsApp account anyway.
