Gellar Returning For “Buffy” Revival Series

Sarah Michelle Gellar is in the final stages of negotiations to reprise her iconic role of Buffy Summers in a revival of the beloved supernatural drama “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”.

The project is reportedly nearing a pilot order with the streamer while Oscar winner Chloé Zhao (“The Rider,” “Eternals,” “Nomadland”) will direct the pilot episode which has been written by “Poker Face” co-showrunners Nora and Lilla Zuckerman.

20th Television and Searchlight TV are backing the project which is reportedly starting a writers room soon, a good sign that the plan is for this to go to series. How many other original Buffy cast members would return is unclear.

The new incarnation will be executive produced by all four talents as well as original series’ executive producers Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, Kaz Kuzui.

Dolly Parton is also set to executive produce, the famed singer and her company Sandoval were very involved in the original series with Parton an uncredited producer.

Creator Joss Whedon has no involvement in the reboot and has not worked in Hollywood in any official capacity since several misconduct allegations in 2021.

The revival comes more than two decades after the show ended its seven-season run in 2001 and “Angel” wrapped its run in 2004. If it goes to series, it will mark the third in the franchise.
