The legend and icon David Lynch has died, he was 78. Lynch’s family confirmed the news in a Facebook post.
In a statement, they say: “It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch. We would appreciate some privacy at this time. There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’ It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.”
Lynch broke through in 1977 with his feature debut “Eraserhead” before scoring an Oscar nomination for “The Elephant Man” and then helming the 1984 film adaptation of “Dune” which he ended up taking his name off.
In 1986 he made the film many consider his masterpiece – the mystery neo-noir “Blue Velvet”. He followed that up with 1990’s “Wild at Heart,” and then changed the face of television creating 1990’s mystery drama series “Twin Peaks” which ran for two seasons and was followed by the 1992 prequel film “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me”.
In the late 1990s he released the trippy “Lost Highway” in 1997 and his most sedate work with 1999’s “The Straight Story” before trying TV again with a pilot that didn’t quite come together and was rejected. He took what he had and added a third act, resulting in 2001’s “Mulholland Drive” which has topped some notable greatest films of the 21st century lists.
His last film was 2006’s “Inland Empire,” but he notably returned to filmmaking with 2017’s “Twin Peaks: The Return” – directing all 18 episodes of that series follow-up as well as co-starring back in his role as FBI Deputy Director Gordon Cole.
Lynch, honored with an Honorary Academy Award in 2019, remains one of the most influential filmmakers of these days, and popular on social media with his postings and updates. Our sincerest condolences go out to his family, friends and many fans.
