Everton vs Tottenham predictions

David Moyes’ return to the Everton dugout ended in disappointment on Wednesday with his Everton team losing 1-0 to Aston Villa. 

The win left Everton sitting 16th in the table at the conclusion of Matchday 21, just one point above the relegation zone. 

Furthermore, Everton are now on a losing streak of three and are six without a win in the Premier League. 

There was some respite with a 2-0 FA Cup win over Peterborough (on the day Sean Dyche was sacked), but other than that, it has nearly all been negative for the Toffees.

There are some glimmers of hope that can be taken from the Villa defeat. Everton created plenty of chances in what was a poor match. And the only real difference between the two teams is that Ollie Watkins took his chance for Villa, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin squandered his late opportunity to take a point from the match.

But things are likely to get better for Calvert-Lewin. Playing under Sean Dyche can’t be easy for any frontman. His strikers have to feed off scraps.

Under Moyes, things will be different. The Scot will look to get Calvert-Lewin more involved and give him more confidence. The new manager knows if he can get his striker to score goals, Everton will stay up.

Not that Moyes would want to see a fellow manager sacked. But if his Everton team can claim three points against Spurs on live TV on Sunday, he will heap the pressure on his opposite number Ange Postecoglou. 

The Tottenham manager has seen his team claim wins in both domestic cups last week, but his team’s form in the Premier League has been abysmal.

Wednesday night’s 2-1 defeat at Arsenal was Tottenham’s fourth defeat in their last five Premier League matches. 

Furthermore, the Lilywhites have now won only one of their last nine in the Premier League, picking up just five points from a possible 27 since their remarkable 4-0 win over Manchester City.

Spurs do have an injury crisis which has left them threadbare at the back. But the manager’s reluctance to adapt his style or tactics with such a shortage of defenders has left Tottenham fans angry. 

Surely Big Ange is now on borrowed time. The results are one thing. But he came out and publicly criticised his players again after the defeat to Arsenal.

As refreshing as it is from a football fan’s perspective to hear a manager speak the truth, we do have to wonder how it is going down with the players in the dressing room. 

Postecoglou is almost managing like he wants to get the sack. He is doing everything possible to upset his players, the fans, and ultimately Daniel Levy. 

The former Celtic boss is the 5/4 favourite to be the next Premier League manager to leave his position. Lose to Everton, and it might become a reality.

Everton are going to make it difficult for Spurs at Goodison Park. David Moyes is a wiley old campaigner, and he knows what to do to give his team the best chance to upset Tottenham in this fixture. 

Moyes will also benefit from knowing exactly what Spurs and Postecoglou will do. Afterall, everyone does.

A goal is surely coming soon for Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

We’ve already mentioned how David Moyes will know goals from his striker will keep Everton in the Premier League, and we can be confident that the experienced Scot will have been building Calvert-Lewin up in training. 

The 27-year-old must know that the likes of Harry Kane and Erling Haaland would score far less in a team managed by Sean Dyche. So the change of manager will have already given the luckless striker a boost in confidence.

He came close to breaking his barron run against Aston Villa. And with Spurs likely to give up plenty of chances for Everton, this could be the ideal match for Calvert-Lewin to finally get his name back on the scoresheet in the Premier League.

Ange Postecoglou likes to make lots of changes with his selections in attack for Spurs. 

We are not sure from one week to the next who will start up top. Even captain Heung-Min Son doesn’t seem assured of a starting berth.

One man who does start nearly every match is Dominic Solanke. The big-money summer signing might not be the most prolific goalscorer, but he is a good all round centre-forward, who is the focal point of most of Tottenham’s attacking play. 

Solanke is learning to put himself about more. He is getting into good goal scoring positions, and is becoming a real handful for defenders. 

The Tottenham striker had three shots against Arsenal on Wednesday. Had it not been for the exceptional defending of Gabriel, he would have had more efforts and probably a goal at the right end. 

We feel he will cause Everton problems and expect him to have at least three shots in the match.
