Just days after scoring an astounding 13 nominations, Jacques Audiard’s edgy musical “Emilia Pérez” and its star Karla Sofía Gascón have become controversy magnets.

Every awards season lately has had to have a villain. Last year’s was pretty obviously Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro” from the get-go, while others, like Peter Farrelly’s “Green Book,” took a little longer to emerge. Certain parts of the industry love these films, but a lot of others love to hate them.

This season, “Emilia Perez” seemed to emerge with that title. The musical, about a male Mexican drug cartel boss who transitions to become a woman and fake her own death so she can finally live authentically, landed mixed-positive critical reviews and outright negative audience reviews at release.

Scoring big at the Golden Globes, the movie then went on to a remarkably large number of nominations for the Oscars last week. In the wake of that, a bunch of criticism about the film has flooded online – and not just from the usual suspects. Critics across the political spectrum are also piling on, and even GLAAD has slammed the film – calling it a “profoundly retrograde portrayal of a trans woman.”

The last few days has seen troubling old tweets by Gascón, the first openly transgender woman to be nominated for an acting Oscar, resurfacing and going viral after being discovered by journalist Sarah Hagi. The comments saw Gascón being critical of murder victim George Floyd, Muslims in her native Spain, and diversity at the Oscars.

Gascón had already been in the headlines after reportedly suggesting in an interview that online forces were working with best actress nominee Fernanda Torres (“I’m Still Here”) to smear Gascón and the “Emilia Pérez” team.

Gascón has now publicly apologised for the old tweets, saying in a statement via Variety: “I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt. As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain. All my life I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness.”

Final voting on the Oscars runs from February 11th-18th with the winners then announced March 2nd at the ceremony.
