Dingyun Zhang Professes His Love for Action Figures in FW25
For Fall/Winter 2025, Dingyun Zhang continues to draw inspiration from his childhood relics. Entitled “PLAYFORM,” the collection name combines the creative aspect of “play” with the structural nature of “form” to symbolize the playful rethinking of traditional uniforms.Bold, exaggerated proportions, innovative silhouettes and distinct fabric choices are some of the key elements that Zhang has translated into the latest lineup. This concept stemmed from Zhang’s passion for collecting vintage G.I. Joe toys and is prevalent in the way he chose to style the looks. For the lookbook, models are replaced with stiff mannequins featuring camouflage face paints — a nod to Zhang’s beloved action figures.Standout pieces in the collection include wind jackets, ultra-lightweight puffer coats and ski pants. Rendered in a military-inspired palette, these pieces are enhanced with utilitarian touches such as waterproof fabrics, reflective finishes and camouflage prints. The collection also explores the use of coated fabrics that mimic leather, sculptural hooded masks and innovative layering techniques. These details mirror the exaggerated forms of G.I. Joe action figures while transforming them into futuristic, functional pieces suitable for everyday life.“PLAYFORM” celebrates the reimagining of structure and play, merging the utility of uniforms with the creativity of design.
