Could We See a Pebble Comeback Soon?

Perhaps it’s safe to say that before smartwatches became a common fixture within the consumer tech landscape, Pebble was one of the forerunners of the product category, although it’s been many years now since the brand faded away into obscurity after its acquisition by Fitbit. That might all change soon however, following some new developments.
As per company founder Eric Migicovsky, Google – who in turn owns Fitbit – recently made PebbleOS available online as an open-source project. In an official statement, he confirmed that the brand is indeed coming back, and interested folks can sign up to get official updates about future products. Part of his announcement reads:
I had really, really, really hoped that someone else would come along and build a Pebble replacement. But no one has. So… a small team and I are diving back into the world of hardware to bring Pebble back!
This time round, we’re keeping things simple. Lessons were learned last time! I’m building a small, narrowly focused company to make these watches. I don’t envision raising money from investors, or hiring a big team. The emphasis is on sustainability. I want to keep making cool gadgets and keep Pebble going long into the future.
Migicovsky also stated that none of the current products on the market come with key functionalities such as always-on e-paper screens, long battery life, a “simple and beautiful” user experience, as well as full button control without the need to look at the display for simple operations. Migicovsky adds that he’s working with a team to bring a new PebbleOS device to market with the same functionality, as well as new features.
