Boasting a shaved head look these days for her stage play role in a new adaptation of Sophocles’ “Elektra,” Brie Larson took some time out to reflect on one of her most famous roles – Captain Marvel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Oscar winner was initially announced as playing Carol Danvers to a mostly positive response. Then, in a relatively early example of something that has become much more common these days, past interview quotes were used to rally a backlash.
“Captain Marvel” went on to make over $1 billion at the worldwide box office, and scored fairly positive critics reviews, but also became an early example of what’s dubbed ‘review-bombing’ – so much so that Rotten Tomatoes ended up changing how its Audience Score system worked with more checks and balances in place.
The follow-up, “The Marvels,” flopped hard in late 2023 and seemingly ended the solo Captain Marvel films. Despite all that happened, Larson tells The Telegraph (via CBM) she’s taken some of the role with her in real life:
“I was aware that taking Carol would make me more of a public person than I was before, but I thought that what the film was saying was more important than my fear, and I also thought I trusted myself to know how to manage my life.
It was a life-changing experience. A lot of the characters I play, I’m like ‘thank you, goodbye’ once it’s done. I don’t feel the need to bring them home. With Captain Marvel, most of the things I learnt from her – her agency, her sense of self – I’m keeping. It was great that she could also be this experience for others.”
The interviewer then asked her about the backlash from some quarters, to which the writer claims “the temperature in the room plummets” and she blankly responded: “I don’t know, I don’t pay attention”. Further attempts at questioning on this front didn’t go well.
We’ve yet to see if Larson’s Carol Danvers will be back for “Avengers: Doomsday” or “Avengers: Secret Wars” coming in 2026 and 2027 respectively.
