Canucks’ Quinn Hughes scratched vs. Red Wings

The Vancouver Canucks will be without their captain on Sunday.

After being listed as a game-time decision, Canucks captain Quinn Hughes was a late scratch for Sunday’s game against the Detroit Red Wings.

Hughes did come out for warmups but was replaced in the lineup by defenceman Elias Pettersson.

Hughes didn’t practise on Saturday after he was in visible discomfort while skating in the third period of Friday’s loss to the Dallas Stars. Hughes finished the game but only skated 23:26, down from his season average by nearly two minutes.

Hughes has once again been the MVP for the Canucks through the first half of the season. He leads both his team and all NHL defencemen in scoring with 59 points through 47 games.

Vancouver will get a boost of three new faces in the lineup, as Marcus Pettersson, Filip Chytil and Drew O’Connor will all make their Canucks debut against the Red Wings.

Chytil was part of the return from the New York Rangers in the J.T. Miller trade, while Pettersson and O’Connor were acquired in a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

You can watch the new-look Canucks take on the Red Wings live on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+ starting at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT.
