Binge ‘Yellowjackets’ Before the Debut of Season Three! [Murder Made Fiction Podcast]

As Jenn and I embark on a month of “Survival Cannibalism” true crime titles, we’re binging Showtime’s Yellowjackets (not true crime, but loosely inspired by real-life tragedies such as the Miracle in the Andes). Each day on Patreon we’re discussing two episodes of the series, working our way through S01 and S02, catching up just in time to watch the new season on Feb 14.

In Yellowjackets, an all-female high school soccer team crashes in the Canadian Rockies en route to Nationals in 1996, stranding the teens in the wilderness for 19 months. As team leader Jackie (Ella Purnell) struggles to adjust, her secretly pregnant best friend Shauna (Sophie Nélisse) drifts towards the leadership style of domineering Taissa (Jasmin Savoy Brown) and spiritual Lottie (Courtney Eaton).

Meanwhile, bad girl Natalie (Sophie Thatcher) begins hunting with – and dating – Travis (Kevin Alves), while outcast Misty (Samantha Hanratty) finds new purpose as a member of the group. But what’s up with the creepy cabin, the symbols, and Lottie’s ominous declarations? Will the group be rescued before they starve to death…or is there a new source of food waiting to be found in the wild?

Then there’s the present (2021) timeline in which the survivors find themselves embroiled in new mysteries. Adult Shauna (Melanie Lynskey) struggles with her boring marriage to high school crush Jeff (Warren Kole), while Adult Taissa (Tawny Cypress) is running for Senate, but has begun sleepwalking and losing time like when she was a teen. Adult Natalie (Juliette Lewis) gets out of rehab and finds Adult Travis has apparently died by suicide, albeit under suspicious circumstances, prompting her to connect with Adult Misty (Christina Ricci) who has no qualms about doing bad things to protect her friends.

Who is blackmailing the adult Yellowjackets? Will Shauna’s ill-advised fling with Adam (Peter Gadiot) ruin everyone’s life? Is reporter Jessica Roberts (Rekha Sharma) going to expose them all? And who else from 1996 survived?
