Benedict Cumberbatch Reveals Doctor Strange Not In Doomsday But Has Pivotal Role In Secret Wars

In a recent interview MCU star Benedict Cumberbatch reveals that Doctor Strange is not in Doomsday, but has a pivotal role in Secret Wars. Cumberbatch who has played Stephen Strange in the MCU since Doctor Strange and recently spoke with Variety.

The piece begins with Cumberbatch talking about his reaction to finding out Robert Downey Jr. was back as Doctor Doom. He texted Kevin Feige himself.

“I texted, ‘What the fuck?’ and then quickly added, ‘Good what-the-fuck. I mean, good what-the-fuck,’” Cumberbatch said.

However, Cumberbatch also revealed he won’t be facing the new villain in Doomsday.

“Is that a spoiler?” he asks. “Fuck it!”

‘According to Cumberbatch, plans for Doctor Strange to appear in the next “Avengers” movie were overhauled when Jonathan Majors got axed by Marvel after he was convicted of assaulting his ex-girlfriend. Majors’ villain Kang was going to be the new “Avengers” villain. That duty now falls to Downey, and Cumberbatch said Doctor Strange sitting out “Doomsday” has to do with “the character not aligning with this part of the story.” But Doctor Strange will be “in a lot” of 2027’s “Avengers: Secret Wars” and is “quite central to where things might go,” the actor teased.’

Though not covered in the highlights package article linked above, it’s being reported Cumberbatch also tells Variety that Doctor Strange 3 is still in development. He gives no indication as to hen that might be.

We had heard rumor Tom Holland would be the lead of Doomsday. Whereas, Cumberbatch would lead Secret Wars with the likes of Jackman and Maguire supporting. However, with the scripts all just recently being re-written I’m not sure if that is still relevant? Strange definitely was in the plans for Avengers 5 when it was called The Kang Dynasty.
