Apple is mashing up Psy and Megan Thee Stallion for a K-pop reality show

Having apparently just heard of this super-new, completely unknown musical phenomenon called K-pop, Apple TV+ has decided to find a way to render the genre in the single way that will be most perfectly palatable to average American ears: By turning it into a reality music competition show, under Megan Thee Stallion's watchful eye.

Rest assured that the "Savage" rapper won't be alone in her stewardship, though: KPopped will also star "Gangnam Style" creator Psy, effectively bringing together several pop culture institutions that even your grandparents probably know about at this point. The series will play up the cross-cultural links that have seen K-pop become a massive musical force in the West over the last decade-plus: Each episode will see "western icons" take one of their songs and, working with "top-tier K-pop idols," rework it to be performed in front of a live audience in South Korea, who will then vote on the most successful mash-up. Created by Lionel Richie, the show's obviously going to live or die based on who the producers can get involved, but the premise, at least, sounds kind of interesting. (At least nobody will be bouncing around in any ridiculous masks, unlike the last South Korean music competition show that ended up exploding in the U.S.)

No word yet from Apple TV+ about a release date for the series, although a list of performers will apparently roll out some time in the future.
